Minutes for October 6, 2015 Meeting/Bell MS Library


Attendees: Board Members: Kay Markovich, President; Tracy Fletcher, Vice President; Lynae Douthit, Treasurer; Julie Behrens, Secretary; Bridget Jones, Principal. Additional guests: Lynn Renter, Greg Aigner, Kathy Sugnet, Amy Jones, Jayson Haberkorn, Wendy Hirons, Cindy Pearson, Danica Gerig, Michelle Trader, Barbara Goldman, Beth Bunchman, Jackie Grenier and Mary Gallagher.


wAdministrative Functions:

Ÿ Kay called the meeting to order at 5:12

Ÿ Disposition of Minutes: Julie introduced the minutes from the September meeting. A motion was made to approve the minutes. The minutes were approved with no changes.


wFinancial Report:

Ÿ Lynae gave a financial update. Because the PTA raised significantly more then anticipated totals for the magazine sale (approximately $25,700 this year and approximately $19,000 last year), it was proposed that we distribute an increased amount of $20,000 towards the teacher grants. Kay motioned to approve the change and it was approved.

Ÿ It was mentioned that Vice Principal Schulz requested gift cards to reward teachers for distributing tracks for good behavior. The PTA had 10 leftover $5 gift cards, which we donated to help that program.


wNew Business Updates:

Ÿ Magazine Sales Fundraiser: The student body/PTA partnership raised more than $25,000 from the magazine sale fundraiser. A new record for this fundraiser!

Ÿ It was discussed that straight donations to the magazine sale are welcome but that the emphasis will remain on magazine sales.

Ÿ The grant selection meeting to discuss disbursement of these funds will take place on Friday, October 9 at 8:30 am in the main office conference room.

Ÿ BMS PTA Thank You Cards: Artwork was created by students, Elizabeth and Hannah Ninke, and production of the cards is in process.
Ÿ Bell Book Fair: This event is currently underway. It was noted that Ms. Mullen needs volunteers for the Thursday, October 8th conference day.

Ÿ Bell Backyard: Kay thanked the committee for all their efforts in making the Bell Backyard happen. Tracy gave an update on the Bell Backyard popsicle party which was very well received by the students (especially the giant otter pops and artwork by our former Bell Student Mina).

Ÿ PTA Volunteering Ask on the BMS MS online app: It was mentioned by Kay Markovich that on the BMS app there is currently an application for volunteering that we were unaware of. There were 3 applications for volunteering that had been received at the PTA gmail account this school year that will be considered. The PTA board was not aware of this communication and considers it a great tool but the verbiage to include current volunteer opportunities needs to be updated. Kay will manage.

Ÿ Bob’s Atomic Burger BMS “Social”: This event will be held at Bob’s on Sunday, October 18th with funds going to the Bell PTA to distribute.

Ÿ Future Bobcat Night: This event for new 6th and 7th graders to Bell will be held November 19th at BMS. The high school future Demon night will be held November 18th at 6:30pm at GHS. The PTA agreed to spread the word regarding the GHS night via the PTA website and weekly Eblast.


wVolunteer opportunities available:

Ÿ Marne Brassell volunteered to chair Lakeside Night for 2016.

Ÿ There are still open volunteer positions with the PTA. They are listed on the PTA website and are being promoted via the Friday Eblasts as well.



ŸFor the parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, October 8, Jackie Grenier asked for all food donations to be dropped off at the school and a signup list was distributed.

Ÿ The Barnes and Noble Social/Fundraiser will take place on Thursday, November 12th. Bell’s new Aca-BELL-as A Cappella group will perform and Tokyo Joes and Chipotle will be participating vendors this year and will give a percentage of sales to Bell PTA. Bell’s PTA will also get 10% of sales from all Barnes & Noble sales that night. The possibility of signing up Bell MS PTA as a recipient of donations from Whole Foods as a percentage of sales for a day was discussed and determined not necessary unless we have it conjunction with some sort of healthy living event.  Michelle Trader clarified that we do not need to promote the Whole Foods day as any sort of fundraising, we can simply sign-up and receive the donations.  She will investigate further. Volunteers are needed.

wMembership Update:

Ÿ Bell’s BTA membership is currently at 85 people including staff/families
